- 9 Days in Northern & Central Italy: A Chill Road Trip from the Coast to the Tuscan Hills
Looking for an exciting road trip adventure in Italy? You’ve come to the right place — here’s a 9-day itinerary to help you plan your Italian adventure. If you're dreaming of a trip that mixes colorful seaside villages, peaceful lake views, cozy vineyards and authentic local experiences, keep reading! Over 9 days and 8 nights, we explored the Ligurian coast , the stunning Lake Como , and the rolling hills of Tuscany — all at a chill pace, with plenty of time for relaxing, taking photos, and enjoying good food. Day 1-3 La Spezia & Cinque Terre The main goal of our trip was to visit Cinque Terre, but reaching the coastal villages by car isn't easy. Hotels and B&Bs in the area can also be quite expensive, so we chose to stay in La Spezia, which turned out to be the perfect base. We arrived in La Spezia late at night, checked into our B&B, and went straight to sleep — we wanted to be fresh for our full Cinque Terre day. The next morning, we took the Cinque Terre Express and visited Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, skipping Corniglia (it’s the one with all the steep stairs and climbs, and we wanted to keep things relaxed). Each village had its own charm — from beachside vibes and panoramic viewpoints to coloreful streets and amazing food. The following day, we took it easy and explored La Spezia itself — walked around the port, enjoyed the local food, and packed for the next part of our trip. Day 4-6 Como, Bellagio, Menaggio & Varenna From the coast, we drove north to Lake Como, where we spent four beautiful days. Our accommodation was just 10 minutes from Como's city center by car — perfect for exploring. We arrived in the afternoon, took a walk along the Lungolago, then rode the funicolare to Brunate for a short walk and lake views from above. In the evening, we had dinner in Como’s city center — the atmosphere at night is so peaceful, with lots of restaurants and pretty wine bars. The next morning, we drove to Bellagio, wandered through its pretty alleys and viewpoints, and then took a ferry to Menaggio. Spending the day between these two towns gave us such the perfect mix — Bellagio is elegant and full of little shops, while Menaggio feels more local and calm. On our last full day, we visited Varenna, which quickly became one of my favorites. It’s smaller, quieter, and has such a romantic feel — the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Walk) along the lake is just beautiful, and the town's center has such a picturesque vibe. Day 7-9 Montepulciano Our final stop before heading home was Montepulciano, in the heart of Tuscany. We left Lake Como in the morning and arrived in the afternoon — just in time for sunset! We had dinner surrounded by vineyards and went to bed early to be ready for the next day. After days of moving around, this was the perfect place to slow down. The next morning, we explored Montepulciano’s stunning cypress views and its historic center, and, of course, enjoyed some local wine and pasta. It’s such a peaceful town — the kind of place where you just walk slowly, take in the scenery, and savor the moment. This trip really showed me how beautiful and diverse Italy is — from the seaside charm of Cinque Terre to the calm views of Lake Como and the peaceful hills of Tuscany. Traveling slowly made each place even more special. The best time to visit is at the beginning or end of summer, when the weather is warm but the crowds are smaller. More detailed posts coming soon 🤍
- Experiencing the Beautiful Lotus Lantern Festival at Samgwangsa Temple (삼광사) in Busan
Have you ever witnessed the most beautiful Lotus Lantern Festival in South Korea? Celebrating Buddha's birthday, this festival transforms temples into breathtaking spectacles adorned with colorful lanterns, and Samgwangsa Temple (삼광사) in Busan is one of the best spots to experience it. SAMGWANGSA TEMPLE - 삼광사 Samgwangsa Temple, situated at the base of Baekyang Mountain, is a Buddhist sanctuary beloning to the Cheontae-jong Order, the third largest Buddhist Order in South Korea. Though relatively young, constructed in the early 1980s, it has flourished into one of Busan's largest temples. Together with Beomeosa Temple and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Samgwangsa, is the the third most famous temple in the city. A GLOWING CELEBRATION: DISCOVERING THE LOTUS LANTERN FESTIVAL LOTUS LANTERN FESTIVAL 2024 2024.4.27. (Fri) ~ 2024.5.15. (Sun) UPDATED-> 2025.04.12 ~ 2025.05.06 Each year, Samgwangsa Temple hosts the Lotus Lantern Festival, a vibrant celebration of Buddha's Birthday. The temple is adorned with over 40.000 beautiful and colorful lanterns, illuminating the night with a breathtaking glow. It's so beautiful that it draws visitors from all around the country. MY VISIT TO THE TEMPLE: DAYTIME TO NIGHT TIME I visited Samgwangsa Temple on a weekday, arriving around 7 pm when there was still a lot of daylight. I wanted to be able to see the beautiful temple at different times of the day, so I decided to go at that time. For those planning a visit, arriving slightly before evening allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of the lanterns. Weekdays are preferable to avoid the crowds! During the weekend it's extremely crowded and the traffic congestion makes it hard to reach the temple by car/taxi. WHY YOU SHOULDN'T MISS IT Having visited the festival for the second consecutive year, I can say that it's a must-see event for anyone in Busan or in South Korea during this time. The atmosphere created by the lightened lanterns is truly unforgettable! You definitely won't be disappointed as it's a very unique experience! GETTING TO SAMGWANGSA TEMPLE Getting to Samgwangsa is very easy since it's located near Seomyeon, Busan's city center. Simply get off at Seomyeon station and head to exit 9. From there, catch the Busanjin-gu 15 bus , which takes you directly to the temple entrance. There is no entrance fee to the temple.
- A Stroll Through Spring: The Magic of The Nakdong River's Cherry Blossom Trail in Busan
Experience the Enchanting Beauty of The Nakdong River Cherry Blossom Trail (낙동제방벚꽃길) Spring is here, and it’s truly the best season of the year! The cherry blossoms make it even more special, adding a burst of color and beauty to the season. Have you ever experienced the magic of cherry blossoms in Busan, South Korea? If not, what are you waiting for? The cherry blossoms are still here, but not for long—be sure to visit before they fade. This spring, I had the chance to visit the Nakdong River Cherry Blossom Trail , and it was even more stunning than I had imagined! I went last Sunday when the blossoms were at their peak, and the view was simply breathtaking. The vibrant petals stretched across the sides of the entire trail, creating a striking contrast against the sky. The peaceful atmosphere, along with the blossoms' surreal beauty, perfectly captured the essence of spring! The trail was bustling with people walking and taking photos, creating a lively atmosphere. Families with children were enjoying a leisurely stroll beneath the blooming trees. I did my best to capture the beauty without any people in the frame, but let’s just say the lively crowd was hard to avoid! Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, my visit coincided with the ongoing cherry blossom festival, which brought even larger crowds. This annual event featured food trucks by the trail and music. The Nakdong River Cherry Blossom Trail is lined with cherry trees, forming a stunning tunnel of blossoms that stretches for miles. Walking through it, I couldn’t help but feel the refreshing vibe of spring. My visit to the trail was unforgettable, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the chance to experience it before the blossoms are gone. Some more memories of this beautiful day!

Originally, they envisioned growing tangerines and raising pigs on the island, but both ventures failed. Afterwards, they decided to transform a simple island into a floral masterpiece. The couple worked hard for nearly two decades, from 1976 to 1994, to realize their vision. Their dedication and hard work resulted into the creation of South Korea's most breathtaking botanical garden. Finally, in 1995, Oedo Botania opened to the public, and since then, this beautiful island welcomed over 20 million visitors. WHAT YOU CAN FIND ON THE ISLAND Oedo Botania is a treasure of over 3000 plant species from South Korea and other parts of the world, including exotic subtropical varieties. From the flora, beautiful sculptures to the Greek Pavilion, Venus Garden, Hill of Love, Eden Church, Breakwater and Lighthouse of Hope, this island is decorated with something new and stunning in every corner. Other remarkable attractions are the Flower Garden, Stairway to Heaven and the Cactus Garden. However, there is much more to see apart from these. On the island you can also find an ice cream kiosk during the summer, a cafe which is very busy, and a small gift shop where you can stop on your way back. HOW TO GET TO OEDO? Oedo Botania is accessible only by ferry from Geoje island. However, you can take the ferry from several departure points of Geoje. You'll find a list of departure docks below, along with links to their websites for detailed information and booking options. Alternatively, the Oedo Botania website offers comprehensive guidance. You can check the most convenient dock for your trip, with online booking available. You can book only a roundtrip to Oedo Island. Booking a round-trip package means your journey starts and ends at the same point. Normally, the packages include a bonus view of the stunning Haegeumgang Island from the ferry. The ride is about 30 minutes, and you'll have around 3 hours to soak in Oedo's beauty. Remember, you'll return on the same ferry, so keep track of its name and any instructions. My trip started from Wahyeon Dock, conveniently near my stay at Wahyeon Beach. After booking the ferry online, I purchased my Oedo entry ticket at a dockside office and filled out a quick contact form, mandatory before getting on the boat. The ferry ride lasted for about 30 minutes, during which passengers headed up to the roof to feed the seagulls. It's an exciting, yet scary experience as countless seagulls were literally flying over my head - definitely a memorable part of the trip! KEY VISITOR INFORMATION Remember, you'll need two separate tickets for the ferry and island entry. The ferry round-trip ticket is around 20.000 won. Oedo Island's opening hours vary by season: - Summer season: 8:00 am~7:00 pm - Winter season: 8:30 am~5:00 pm Oedo Island ticket price: (adult) 11.000 won; (children) 5.000 won You cannot drink, smoke or bring food to the island. It's also prohibited to collect anything from the island (leaves, flowers, plants, etc..). SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR VISIT • Be sure to follow all information given on the booking site • Arrive at the dock at least 30 minutes before your ferry departure time • Best to go early morning, because the island will be crowded, especially during peak hours • The time is not enough to explore the entire island, take pictures, and relax at the cafe. So make sure to check the time, and don't miss the boat back • Bring water with you • Apply sunscreen / take an uv protective umbrella / portable fan during summer because the sun will be very strong and it will be extremely hot Oedo Botania isn't just a heaven for nature lovers, but it's also a photographer's paradise, making it an essential destination for anyone visiting South Korea. I'm sure that visiting Oedo Island will be an unforgettable experience for anyone, just like it was for me!

Why Geoje Island Should Be Your Next Destination This island is absolutely worth visiting! Geoje, with is relaxing atmosphere and breathtaking landscapes, offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Despite living in Busan, where beaches are within easy reach, I found the vibe in Geoje uniquely calming and less crowded. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a longer holiday, Geoje makes it a perfect choice for any season, though it truly comes alive in summer and spring. I will talk about the beaches in Geoje in another post! I spent a few days on the island last August, and I absolutely loved it. I will definitely re-book my summer getaway again this year. What to See in Geoje - Top Must-See Attractions 1. MAEMISEONG (매미성) One of the most photogenic destinations is Maemi Castle, a fortress named after the devastating Maemi typhoon of 2003. The fortress was built to shield the island's crops from future natural disasters. What truly stands out is that the fortress was built by a single man, without any blueprint. A man constructed it brick by brick, drawing inspiration from medieval European architecture. When you get to the entrance of Maemiseong, you'll have to go down a small street leading to the fortress. You'll see lots of small shops, cafes, and ice cream stores where to get some snacks. The fortress and its story are truly fascinating. This place has lots of famous photo zones where you'll see people lining up for the best shots! It's a must-see place in Geoje! 2. WINDY HILL (바람의 언덕) Windy Hill, just like its name, is the windiest spot in Geoje. This place definitely lives up to its name! Located on the left side of the island, on a hill at the end of the fishing village of Dojangpo, is a must-see destination, known for its stunning scenic views and natural beauty. At the top of the hill there's a big windmill. To get there you need to follow a staircase trail with various observation points. The view from the top is breathtaking. At the base of Windy Hill, you'll find an array of charming cafes and restaurants, and a small port. Just like its name, it's going to be windy in every season! I went during the hottest summer day, and the wind was very strong. It's definitely a very fascinating place to see. 3. NOJASAN - PANORAMA CABLE CAR (거제 파노라마 케이블카) You definitely cannot miss one of the best and most stunning cable car rides and views at Nojasan mountain! The Geoje Panorama Cable Car is a 1.56km ride that connects Hakdong Pass to the summit of Nojasan. It offers a truly breathtaking view of the mountain, sea, and forest leading to the top. You can either choose the normal cable car, or the glass cable car option. I advise you to get a normal cable car if you're afraid of heights like me! In fact, I booked the glass cable car, just to change it last minute to a normal one! If you're a fan of hiking, then you can also opt for hiking the mountain which offers many different trails, and it takes about 5 hours to get to the summit. Maybe it's not the best choice during the summer, but it would be a very nice hike during spring or fall season! The cable car ride is 15-20 minutes long, showcasing the island's natural beauty. The building at the top of the mountain has a cafe, restaurant and a few observation decks. However, the best observation point is located outside the building. You have to take a wooden staircase leading to a two-floors observation deck to get there. Seeing the scenery from the tallest mountain was truly beautiful. There is an open view of the sea, the surrounding islands and mountains. Even if you're not a fan of cable cars, I honestly recommend visiting this place. Although the cable car is very far from other attractions, I'm sure you won't regret visiting it. You can take the public bus which stops at the cable car building. And the cable car ride is about 15-20.000won per person (round trip) depending on which option you choose. 4. OEDO BOTANIA (외도 보타니아) Oedo Botania is a small island transformed into a Mediterranean-style botanical garden, crafted by a Korean couple in the 1970s. With over 700 plant varieties, this small island boosts beautiful colors and landscapes that evolve with the changing seasons, offering different views four times a year. The island is accessible only via Geoje, with ferries departing from various ports. You can find more information about the schedule and booking on the Oedo Botania official website. Make sure to book it in advance because you might not be able to get a ticket last minute. The ferry ride is about 30 minutes long, and it typically includes the viewing of Haegeumgang (해금강), a beautiful rocky island. Once arrived on Oedo Botania, you'll have approximately 3 hours to visit the island, after that you need to return to the departure deck and take the same ferry back. To make the most of your Oedo experience, you should consider visiting in the early morning to avoid crowds during peak hours. 5. HAEGEUMGANG ROCK (해금강) As mentioned above, on the way to Oedo Botania, the boat typically stops near Haegeumgang. It's a beautiful rocky island which can be visited only by ferry. A truly landmark of Geoje, consisting of beautiful cliffs and a natural cave. The ferry will stop close enough for you to view it. Before booking the ticket to Oedo, make sure that Haegeumgang is included. 6. GEUNPO CAVE (근포동굴) Geunpo Cave is a twin cave, located on the beach behind Geunpo Village. It's a very famous photo zone, best to visit during sunset to get the most breathtaking shots. 7. GYERYONGSAN MOUNTAIN (계룡산) Gyeryongsan is a mountain overlooking Gohyeon. There are many hiking trails to the top of the mountain, alternatively you can take the Geoje Tourism Monorail which only recently re-opened. The monorail is located at Geoje P.O.W. Camp Historic Park (거제도 포로수용소 유적공원). More information can be found on the Geoje Tourism Monorail official website. Cafe Recommendation in Geoje: 8. ON THE SUNSET This cafe is located on the upper left side of the island. It's a beautiful three-story Hawaiian-decorated cafe connected to a sea deck, perfect for sunset views. Unfortunately, I visited the cafe on a cloudy day, but despite not being able to see the stunning sunset view, I had plenty of opportunities to take beautiful pictures! Their signature coffee and cakes were delicious, and the terrace gives a very cozy vibe. Nearby there're restaurants and a bus stop. The cafe is located just 30 minutes away from the Geoje Gohyeon terminal, so it would be a good place to visit as last stop before heading back home! I recommend arriving at the cafe early on a sunny afternoon to secure a sea-view window seat, though it can get crowed even on weekdays. How to Get to Geoje - Seoul to Geoje → You can take the intercity bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (동서울) to Gohyeon Bus Terminal (거제 고현) or to Jangseungpo Bus Terminal (거제 장승포), which is further down. There are 4 buses every day, and the cost is approximately 45.000won. Alternatively, there are more bus options leaving from Seoul Nambu Bus Terminal (서울남부). - Busan to Geoje → You can take the bus from Busan Dongbu Bus Terminal (부산동부) to Gohyeon Bus Terminal (거제 고현), or from Seobu Sasang Bus Terminal (부산서부 사상) to Jangseungpo Bus Terminal (거제 장승포). There're many buses leaving throughout the day, and the cost is approximately 15.000won. Transportation The best way to visit Geoje is by car. Geoje is a big island, although it's possible to move by public transportation, you might have to wait longer for a bus as buses don't run as often as they do in bigger cities. So, you need to plan well your itinerary. Alternatively, you can opt for a taxi. Even though it will be more expensive, if you plan your visits to attractions which are next to one another, is doable. On my trip to Geoje I moved around by taxi as I was short on time, and I also wanted to check out as many places as I could.
